The nights are getting darker and the leaves are turning golden brown – which can only mean one thing; Halloween is just around the corner. If you’re thinking of throwing a Halloween party with a difference, hosting your Spooktacular soiree outside can make for a memorable event that’ll get your guests (or should we say ghosts?) talking! Here are Moda’s top tips for hosting a garden party at this terrifying time of year.

graveyard

Create your own ghoulish graveyard

One way to really go all out with your decorations is to turn your garden into a creepy graveyard. We’re talking fake gravestones made from scrap wood or cardboard, skeletons, cobwebs – the lot! If you really want to make your new graveyard look the part, you could plant some gothic plants such as opium poppies, moonflower or penny black nemophilas amongst your spooky new additions.

pumpkin

Host a pumpkin carving competition

When it comes to Halloween, it’s a case of the more pumpkins the better! Nothing screams Halloween than a good old-fashioned jack-o-lantern, and it’s a lot of fun to carve your own designs into the seasonal fruit. Hosting a carving competition takes things one step further – and you can display the eerie entries in your garden afterwards! Also, there’s nothing more satisfying than using all that leftover pumpkin in some delicious soup.

halloween food

Serve some frightening food

No Halloween party is complete without some trick or treats! You could bake homemade cupcakes and ice them with orange icing, or even some biscuits shaped like witches’ fingers. Cooking up a large batch of a winter warmer such as a soup or a stew is another great way to keep people full and happy. Why not theme your drinks, too? A witches’ brew punchbowl or some mulled wine and cider always goes down well.

Decorate your living space

Once you’ve taken care of the menu and the activities, it’s time to make the final touches to your garden! If you have an outdoor living area with garden furniture, you’ll want to make it welcoming for your guests. Consider putting up a gazebo to keep people dry, and lay out your food on your outdoor dining table. Lanterns, fairy lights and candles are always a great addition to add some atmosphere, and of course you’ll need to stick on a Halloween playlist to get people moving!
